Composting organic waste

Vanheede Biomass Solutions has one of the largest and most important composting plants in Europe. The green waste that arrives there (cuttings, flowers, plants, leaves, trees and grass etc.) is processed in various ways and converted into biofuel for biomass plants and into high quality compost for the agricultural sector.

Green waste

Every year, more than 50,000 tonnes of green waste from local authorities and landscape gardeners etc. are converted in our composting plant. That applies to branches, leaves, grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, general cuttings, residue from flowers and leafy plants, straw, weeds and other organic waste including coffee grounds, coffee filters, tea bags and the residue from tobacco production.

Green waste biomass

Large items of garden waste are shredded into biomass. They are then sent as fuel to biomass plants where the heat generated is used to dry primary materials for wooden pellets for example. So your green waste contributes to a healthier environment. It couldn't be more environmentally-friendly!

Compost

The composting process is carried out in several stages:

  • pre-treatment (mixing, reducing and compacting)
  • composting
  • post-maturation
  • refining or post-treatment (refining and sifting into different degrees of fineness)

Compost is an excellent supplement, not a fertilizer. It has a high level of organic materials. We call this decomposed organic material "humus".
